George “Pops” Tree, beloved father, grandfather, cousin and friend, drew his last breath on Tuesday, September 18, 2018. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends.

Pops was a fan of The Temptation’s and as the song says, “Poppa was a rolling stone, wherever he laid his hat was his home.” Having lived in Des Moines, Iowa for 25+ years, Pops now lays hat in his heavenly home.

George Armond “Pops” Tree, Sr., the only child of Catherine Tree and L.C Watson, was born on May 8th, 1957 in St. Louis, Missouri. Raised by his grandmother Louise Tree, he went St. Louis Public Schools and attended Forrest Park College. Pops was a Patient Care Tech for most of his life. He enjoyed and was very passionate about helping others.

He was united in marriage to Re’nee Michelle Tate. From this union they had two sons, Victor Tate and George Tree, Jr. Re’nee also had two sons, Tony and Tori Tate, whom Pops helped raise as his own. Previous to and after this marriage, Pops had five children as well: Kim, Jamel, Eric Williams, Katie and Kayla Tree.

Pops’ second marriage was to Evette Maldrow. Her two children, Twon and Tiffany Jones were taken in as his own as well.

In July of 2002 he married Mary Wanjiku Kimani.

He enjoyed gatherings with family of which there was never a dull moment. He loved having a cold one with anyone he met. His laugh and smile were contagious. George was also affectionately known as Georgie, G, Poppy, and Big G. Those left to cherish his memory are wife Mary Tree; seven children: Kim, Victor Tate, Eric Williams, Jamel, George Tree Jr., Katie and Kayla Tree; step-sons, Tori Tate, Twon Jones; step-daughters, Tiffany Jones, Teresa Muchemi; 25 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. As well as a host of uncles, aunts and close friends.

He is preceded in death by both parents and grandmother. As well as some close uncles and aunts, ex-wife Re’nee Tree (Davis), and step-son Tony Tate.

Funeral service to be held on September 29, 2018 at Elim Christian Fellowship beginning at 2 p.m., 525 E. 9th St. in Des Moines. No burial is planned as he wished to be cremated.

Repast to follow funeral service in the church basement.
