Peggy S. Henn
September 05, 2018
Peggy Staser Henn was born on March 25, 1947 to David and Millicent (Wade) Staser in New Albany, IN. She grew up attending Daisy Hill United Methodist Church and graduated from Eastern High School in 1965.
Peggy loved her childhood in Pekin, Indiana. She was a majorette and enjoyed participating in 4-H projects throughout school. After high school graduation she attended Indiana University and studied Outdoor Education.
At IU she met her husband Gary after being introduced by mutual friends. Peggy and Gary were married on September 1st, 1973. They were able to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary together. After many years of waiting they were blessed with two children, Carrie Elizabeth and Steven Michael. She was a loving mother: attending swim meets, fundraising for Science Club trips, chaperoning field trips and leading numerous Sunday school classes. Peggy was honest, hardworking, genuine, and loved her friends and family dearly. There was not a job, church group, or community effort that Peggy was involved in where she did not make lifelong friends.
Peggy worked numerous places over the course of her career, including Girls Scouts of Central Indiana, Camp Fire Girls and Grand View University. She always had a passion for empowering young adults and youth through education. She was also a proud member of Altoona United Methodist Church for 22 years. Her faith sustained her and she leaned on it in her final days.
Peggy loved being a wife and a mother, but was overjoyed to become a grandma. She was a wonderful Grammy to Leah and Molly. She was always up for an art project, baking cookies or reading a book. She truly loved being a grandma and she was good at it.
Peggy passed away on September 5, 2018 at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa after a battle with Ovarian Cancer at the age of 71. Peggy is preceded in death by her father, David Staser; her mother, Millicent Staser; and her brother, Kenny Staser.
Peggy will be terribly missed by her husband, Gary of Altoona; her daughter, Carrie (Spencer) Sponheim of Altoona; her son, Steven (Andy Hird) Henn of Des Moines; her sister, Patti (Ronnie) Hall of Sellersburg, IN; two granddaughters; and her in-laws, numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and countless friends.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Girl Scouts of Central Indiana or Heifer International in Peggy’s memory.
Family will greet friends at the Adventureland Inn, 3200 Adventureland Dr, Altoona, IA 50009 on Friday, September 14, 2018 from 5-8 pm for wine and sharing of memories of Peggy. A memorial service will be held at Altoona United Methodist Church, 602 5th Ave SW on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 10 am.

While we haven't seen each other since Kittrell Drive, we fondly remember the good times we had together. Street parades, holiday pitch-ins and just good fun. Peggy was a natural leader and was a compassionate woman who truly cared for others. Her involvement with scouts inspired our family to get involved which provided our sons with lifelong skills. May Peggy's legacy continue to inspire others.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Peggy and Gary were my neighbors. Our children were close in age. But most importantly she was a gift to me in our faith journeys. Some individuals just have a special loving God given gift and Peggy was one of those individuals. I'm a better person having known her, your wife, mother and grandmother and so much more. You have my sympathy

Gary, Carrie, and Steven,
the world has lost a remarkable woman. Peggy and I met at Camp Towaki in 1972. Our paths continued to cross many times over the following years. Peggy was a friend with a special way of showing her friendship with a good joke, sharing a meal or a kind word. We spent time by the campfire at Camp Towaki, we were roommates at ACA conferences, connected through Epworth UMC and shared a love for the outdoors. Peggy was kind, warm, authentic, generous and a reflection of her faith. A life and spirit that has touched so many. Peggy's spirit lives on.

To Peggy's Family: As Girl Scout staff here in Indianapolis, Peggy was wonderful with all the volunteers. She was your friend, loved her job and our interactions. I truly respected her so much and missed her when she left. An outstanding person. The heavens gained a very special lady. I am so sorry for your loss.

When we went to the first home swim meet at SE Polk, I felt a little lost since we really didnt know anyone. I shouldnt have worried because Peggy came right up to welcome us and introduce us to other parents.
Carrie and my daughter, Betsy, became good friends. I loved talking to Peggy, she was always so down-to-earth and family oriented. God bless her soul, family and friends.
