John B. Swanson

John Swanson, 94, passed away August 29, 2018, in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born August 13, 1924, in Shenandoah, Iowa, to Alfred and May Swanson.

John served in the United States Army during WWII. He worked for Mt. Arbor Nursery then as an operator for Iowa Power and Light until retirement.

John was a member of Masonic Lodge #140 and Baldwin-Patterson American Legion Post 274. He had a love of farming and enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

John is survived by his children, John (Sandy) Swanson and Sandra (Bruce) Iverson; stepson, Jerry (Sue) Osburn; as well as 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Swanson; sisters, Verna Cain, Marjorie Bright, and Phyllis Richardson; brother, James Swanson, and his stepdaughter, Janet Gsell.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, September 3, 2018, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Graveside services will take place at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at 1:00 p.m.
