August 26, 2018
Edwin Burkett Warren, 99, died Sunday, August 26, 2018, at Deerfield Retirement Community in Urbandale. Ed was born June 14, 1919 in Altoona, Iowa to Clarence and Ethel (Alderson) Warren, and lived in the same home most of his life. He graduated from Altoona High School in 1937. While in high school, Ed worked at the canning factory in Altoona and later helped lay the brick for the present Altoona Elementary School Gymnasium. In his early 20’s, Ed traveled to California where he was trained as a pilot for the B-17 bomber. Following training he was stationed in England and flew 23 missions. After the war, he returned to Iowa and on November 3, 1945, he married Helen Vera Anderson and enjoyed 63 years of marriage. In 1948, Ed and Helen purchased Warren Hatchery from Ed’s parents and owned and operated the hatchery for 15 years, in addition to grinding feed for local farmers. In 1967, Ed and Helen began producing frozen egg noodles under the name of Aunt Vi’s Noodles, also known as Warren Frozen Foods. The family business run by Ed and Helen and their children grew to approximately 180 total employment. In late 2003, the company was sold to the T Marzetti group.
Ed was a charter member of Altoona American Post #682 and the Altoona United Methodist Church. He had a passion for travel and golf. Ed had many accomplishments throughout his life, but his family was by far his most significant source of pride as he worked side by side with his wife and children in the family business. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up as he supported them in all of their activities.
Ed is survived by his daughter Jill Hood of De Soto and her son Lance (Julie) Hood of De Soto and great grandchildren Olivia, Mya and Luke; his son Terry (Detra) of Mitchellville and their children Ryan (Kristin Nieman) Warren of Ankeny and great grandson Blaik, Brad (Carey) Warren of Altoona and great granddaughters Charley and Savannah, Emily (Andrew “A.J.”) Crusinberry of Altoona and great granddaughter Amelia; son Michael (Laura Savage-Warren) Warren of Johnston and their children Trenton Savage-Warren and Kristin (Emil) Bliss of San Antonio, Texas and great grandchildren Noah, Eli, Caleb and Lily Jo; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four sisters Ruth Martin, Rose (Clarence) Bowers, Hazel (Claude) Larimore, and Grace (Harry) Martin and his daughter in law Joann Warren.
Services will be held at Altoona United Methodist Church, 602 5th Avenue SW, Altoona IA. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 30. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 31, followed by a luncheon. A private family burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Altoona United Methodist Church.
The family would like to give special thanks to Karla White for her years of compassionate care and also to the Deerfield Retirement Community staff.

Ed Warren touched many lives and people of all ages. He was able to fill a church with people who all wanted to pay their respects and support the extended Warren clan. My first introduction to Ed came in October of 1986. I enjoyed every meeting and call since that time. He will be missed.
P.S. - My father was also an Army Air Corps aviator. Ed encouraged me to invite him to the airshow in Osh Kosh, WI. He was 86 but acted like he was 19! Great bonding esperience.

99! WOW what a blessed life he had. How fortunate each of you were to have him be a vital part of your lives for so many years! Mom thought the world of him, as you all know, as well as I. Prayers of comfort and remembrance of joy as you each share your memorable moments about him. Judy.

Susan Martin Robertson now lives in Portland, Oregon. She should certainly be included in the list of nieces and nephews who remember Ed and Helen.

Another of our Greatest Generation World Warriors is no longer with us. Infinite thanks to Mr. Ed Warren for his contribution to that great, moral struggle. I enjoyed working for Mike and Terry Warren for years and while visiting the factory I was invited a couple of times to have lunch at the house next door with Ed, Helen and the "boys." It has been an honor to associate with such a genuinely warm, intelligent and hardworking family. God bless Ed and Helen for lives exceptionally well lived.

Everyone probably has a Edwin story, mine starts when I was a teenager, working in my dads grocery store in Ankeny. One of our products was Aunt Vis noodles. They were delivered in a pick up with a freezer on the back of it. I knew the sales person as Warren. An unusual thing, he wore tennis shoes, in those days, very few people wore them regularly. What I remember best about Warren, is how kind he was and always smiling! Just a guy who comes through your life that you dont forget! He will be missed!
