Margaret Koeppel

Margaret Marie Koeppel died peacefully on August 23, 2018 at The Village of Legacy Pointe in Waukee, Iowa at the age of 75.
Margaret is survived by her husband of 56 years, Leon; her children, Jodi (Kim) Downing of Pella, Iowa and Leon (Sara) Koeppel of Sioux City, Iowa; her grandchildren, Cameron (Jill) Downing, Carson (Brie) Downing, Ashton Patten, and Gabriel Patten; her sister Mary Jane Padgitt of Ripon, California; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Ethel Mullen of Des Moines, Iowa and sisters, Betty Marshall of Norwalk, Iowa and Darlene Hathaway of Kewanee, Illinois.
Margaret was born on September 5, 1942 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Russell and Ethel Mullen. She graduated from North High School in 1960. After graduation she met Leon Koeppel who she would marry on May 5, 1962 and spend the rest of her life with. Margaret loved being a mother and was a foster mother before being blessed with her daughter and her son. Margaret continued to spread her love of children welcoming them into her home as a day care provider for many years.
Margaret was a skilled baker and loved to cook, filling her kitchen with love and food for her friends and family. She would spend days making huge amounts of sweets for the Christmas season. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, lunches with her friends and visiting with family. She and Leon looked forward to their annual road trip to California to visit her oldest sister, Mary Jane. Later in life, she enjoyed attending services at Hope Lutheran Church.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., with the funeral service beginning at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, August 27, 2018, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens. A luncheon will be provided at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens following the burial. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Margaret’s life. Memorial donations may be made in her name to Avalon Hospice, 4601 Westown Pkwy, Suite 105, West Des Moines, IA 50266. Flowers and condolences may be sent to Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines, IA 50313. The family would like to thank all the amazing and loving “family” at The Village of Legacy Pointe for the friendship and wonderful care provided to Margaret and family for so many months.
