Robert(JP) Butz was my friend. I knew him from conventions that we attended over the years, and when he decided to join the Klingon Assault Group, it was a joint decision with me. We were together in Kansas City when we were both introduced to them. We rode to a pizza party held by the Klingons there in his old Chevy Blazer painted up like a Star Trek Shuttlecraft, with all the markings. I shared a lot of good times together with him, and I for one will miss him greatly. Those memories will stay with me for as long as I live. In his memory, I will post the Trekkan House motto. Qapla' balth je'. (Success with Honor). He was my brother.

Robert (JP) Butz was an extraordinary fellow. In so many aspects of his life, JP was simply extraordinary.
He had a clever mind which was fertile ground for his innate ability to figure out just how things work, how they fit together, and (often most importantly) how to get them in working order. He was a natural engineer.
He had a keen sense of humor and was the author of some of the finest and funniest gags I've ever had the pleasure to enjoy. Like the time he escorted the "cloaked" Klingon spacecraft in the big parade in Riverside, IA.
JP was a big guy. I think he had to be because his heart was so big. He was always the first in line to help others. Generous with his time and his many talents, he was a problem solver - a rare characteristic these days!
He had a laid-back outlook on life, and made very few demands on others. So long as you liked double mozzarella cheese on the pizza, he'd get along with you just fine. And he was the best hugger ever! I think that's one of the things I'll miss the most.
If you are fortunate enough to have known JP, you'll understand why the word extraordinary fits him so well. And, like me, you'll miss him. But you'll also be extraordinarily grateful that, for a while, he was a part of your life.

One of the brightest stars in the Klingon Empire dimmed over the weekend and finally winked out.
Robert Butz of Des Moines, Iowa succumbed far too early to a fatal disease. I didn't expect him to leave us before spring at the earliest, and knowing J.P. (as he preferred to be called), I expected him to somehow snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. That he died locked in mortal combat with an implacable enemy is a death befitting any Klingon warrior.
A self-taught engineer and fabricator, J.P. could make or fix just about anything from a collapsible picnic table to a power plant. Ask any Midwest Klingon about J.P.'s belt buckle Bat'leth, of which he built many, so that no Klingon need ever be completely disarmed, and you have an inkling of his genius.
His favorite vehicle was a "captured" Federation shuttlecraft with Marina Sirtis's autograph on the dashboard. He was an avid amateur geologist, and his favorite past time was shooting targets with friends.
Robert (J.P.) Butz was my friend for over twenty years. Tonight, I remain his, whatever part of this great cosmos he may be in.
Good night, J.P. Where ever you are.
