Michael Lynch
August 02, 2018
Michael Lynch, of Ankeny, died at age 28 on August 2, 2018, from an accidental overdose. During the last several years of Michael’s life, he struggled and fought his addiction to opioids, which began after a snowboarding accident. We share his story in hope that lives may be saved, and his death will not be in vain. Michael strived to maintain sobriety and wanted a life free from pain. He was sober for a year and a half prior to his death and did not want to leave this world behind. We respect the way he fought this difficult battle, and our broken hearts will forever feel the loss and emptiness of his absence.
Michael was an adventurous, kind, loving young man with a big heart. He deeply loved his family and especially loved being a Dad and raising his daughter Ellie with his longtime love, Jillian. Michael loved music, going to concerts and playing the guitar. He enjoyed the outdoors and spent much of his life snowboarding, skateboarding, disk golfing and hiking. He was known for his stunts, which included snowboarding off his parent’s rooftop in the winter. He was fearless from a very young age! Michael was passionate about helping others. He chaired meetings over the years to help others in their recovery and previously worked at the YESS shelter mentoring homeless youth.
He is survived by his parents, Paul and Marsha Lynch; longtime love and mother of his child, Jillian Johnson; daughter, Ellie Lynch; sisters, Melissa (Luke) Shelton and Rachel Lee; brother, Chad Lynch; grandmother, Marcella Sage; along with several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Alina Lynch, and grandfather Kenneth Sage.
Funeral Services will be held at 6:30 PM on Thursday, August 9th at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens located at 121 NW 60th Ave. in Des Moines. Please bring memories and stories to share. A basket will be available for letters to Michael, Ellie, Jillian, or the family.
In honor of Michael, we ask that you contact your local legislators to advocate for an increase of funding for addiction and mental health research and treatment.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions will be received by the family for a future designation.

We are so sad to hear about the passing of Michael. Michael was in two of my math classes when I taught at Southeast Polk. Paul and Marsha and all four of your kids have been so good to Ron and me since we moved across the street from you 18 years ago. This is the worst news. Losing a child is the worst thing that could happen to anyone. If there is anything we can do for you, please ask. We are here for you.
Michael was one of my kids at Southeast Polk. I will always remember him with a big smile on his face and the kid with the biggest heart that anyone could ever imagine.

I really got to know Michael when Marsha who is my cousin was selling Avon and I was able to stop by the house and visit with her and usually Michael was there as I believe he was in middle school at that time. Anyway, he was always banged up with injuries from his skateboard and I knew then how strong and fearless he was. My heart hurts for the Lynch family and his daughter and girlfriend. Losing a child at any age is so shocking. My love and prayers are with you all.

First i would like to say i am so sorry for your loss and want to convey my deepest condolences.
I knew Mike from Powell CDC. I was in treatment with him in 2013 and despite our huge age difference, i was 53 and Mike was 23, we became good friends. We shared stories and tears and laughter while in treatment. When we got out we continued to hang out and go to meetings together and he would come visit me at the halfway house i went to after treatment. Time passed and we drifted apart and lost contact with each other. Until about a year and a half or maybe two tears ago when i ran into Mike at an NA meeting that i was chairing at Powell and he was once again in treatment. I was happy to see him but not happy for the circumstances. I know Mike hated his addiction and he loved life and his eyes lit up when he talked about his daughter and girlfriend. He loved them dearly and he loved life. Mike showed up at those meetings for a while and even chaired a few. He shared his experience, strength and hope with others freely and always showed great compassion for others. Once again we drifted apart but i heard he was still attending AA meetings and doing well.
Then i heard the tragic news last Friday.
I am deeply saddened by this tragic event.
Michael was one in a million. And i am so happy i got to know him and that he was my friend.
God Bless and may he forever fly high with the Angels.
