John Leo Coleman (Jack), an accomplished artist, died August 9, 2008 after a series of long illnesses.
Born June 25, 1935, Jack grew up in Des Moines, attended Dowling High School and briefly studied for the priesthood at Conception Seminary in Missouri. Jack studied art at Drake University with Jules and Cornelia Kirschenbaum. He proudly served his country in the US Air Force for four years. He designed and built the magnificent stained glass windows at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale and taught grade school at St. Pius and art classes at the Des Moines Art Center. Jack later served as an assistant administrator at the Alberta, Canada Art Institute and taught at the Calgary College of Art. He returned to Iowa in 1999 and retired near his beloved sister, Kathleen Needles and brother-in-law Gene in rural Norwalk. Jack was passionate about art and enjoyed collecting antiques and other unusual artifacts. He loved nature and spending time with his four dogs. Jack will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Surviving are his sister Kathleen, brother-in-law Gene, nephew Gene Needles, Jr., nieces Colleen Steward and Carol Kaas and their families as well as many cousins.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale on Saturday, September 13th at 9:30 a.m. for John Leo Coleman (Jack) who died August 9, 2008. John was the artist who designed and built the stained glass windows at St. Pius Church.
