Service Details

Delphine Agnes Goodman, age 89, of Des Moines took God’s hand as He called her home so softly that only she could hear. No one heard the footsteps of the angels drawing near as they lifted her to heaven to experience God’s glory. Her death came peacefully with her family at her side. In death, as in life, she was amazing grace.
Born Delphine Agnes McMahon on April 30, 1919 to Agnes Loretta and Edward Martin McMahon in Manilla, Iowa, she graduated from Manilla High School in 1937. In June of 1937, she was united in marriage to Clifford E. Chase. Three sons and a daughter were born from the union. As a young woman, Delphine enjoyed years of dancing and playing cards. During WWII, she worked at the ammunition plant for the war effort. After her early marriage ended in divorce, for many years she was a single mother raising her children by herself. By example, she taught her children independence and the true meaning of happiness.
In October 1953, she was blessed with her marriage to John L. Goodman, from which a daughter was born. They made their home on Des Moines’ east side. Through the years, she enjoyed country music, professional wrestling, and family camping trips. Roses, tulips and geraniums were among her favorites and could be found blooming every summer in her garden.
Delphine enjoyed creating memories for her family – Easter egg hunts, sewing Halloween costumes, Christmas gatherings, making her infamous noodles and fabulous chocolate crème pie. She was at home every day for her children as they arrived home from school. Each day was a better day with her beautiful smile and homemade cookies.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, John L. Goodman in 1968, beloved infant son, Billy, four brothers, Cletus, Vernett, Edward and Clarence McMahon, sister, Leta Foley, brother-in-law, Malick Foley, sisters-in-law, Christine McMahon and Pat McMahon.
