Service Details

wVonda Martin 97, of Des Moines, passed away peacefully from this life, of congestive heart failure at Fountain West Care Center in West Des Moines on Tuesday. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2008 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th in Des Moines; funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, August 9, 2008 at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa, burial will take place in Shaul Cemetery.
Vonda was born in Hedrick, Iowa to John Henry and Sarah Amelia (Burtlow) Dickerson on November 8, 1910. She retired from Wolf’s Clothing Store where she worked for many years. She was a member of White Shrine, Daughters of the Nile, Tolteck and was a member of the first Baptist Church in Ottumwa.
Vonda was loved by everyone who knew her for her kind and generous ways, but her family was the most important thing in her life. She enjoyed all the reunions, anniversaries and birthday parties of the extended family.
Vonda is survived by her daughter Janet Richardson of Des Moines and step-daughter, Shirley (Bernard) Gobbel of Pekin, IL; her sisters, Aldonna Isaacson of Mena, AR, Alice (Edward) Farrington; her brother, Floyd (Dee) Dickerson and brother-in-law Stanley Laurich of Ottumwa; her grandchildren, Kirk and Douglas Detrick, Amelia Marchant all of Des Moines, Timothy Detrick of California, Shelley Biersdorf, Becky (Dave) Hoyle of Pekin, IL and Randy Gobbel of Washington State; six great-granddaughters and many nieces and nephews who were very important to her. She was preceded in death by her husband Alton F. Martin, her parents, four sisters, Marguerite Taylor, Lucille Bosworth, Geraldine Laurich, Doris Dickerson; one brother, Glenn Dickerson and one great-grandson, Graham Detrick.
