Richard L. (Dick) Myers
July 22, 2018
Dick Myers, 76, of Norwalk passed away July 22, 2018, at Regency Care Center while in his sleep. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary and Vigil Service at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 2018, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 607 High Street, Des Moines. Services will conclude with a committal at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Dick was born December 13, 1941. He graduated from Saydel High School in Des Moines in 1960. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps. Although he did not go to Vietnam, he was a proud veteran. He never married.
After several years at Keystone Electric in Des Moines, he finally retired in 2007. He was very active in his church, St. Ambrose, until declining health forced him into the nursing home in Norwalk, Iowa.
He is survived by six siblings, Robert (Janice), David, Sharon (Joe) Taylor, Dottie Metroulas, Colleen Davis, Emily Webster (Jeff) Kyle, many nieces and nephews including his special niece, Michele Bertrand.
He was a man of great faith and attended daily mass at St. Ambrose during his healthy years. He not only read the entire Bible, he hand-wrote the Bible eight times, giving a copy to each of his siblings, one to Fr. Jim Kiernan (deceased) who was his spiritual mentor, and a copy to his favorite niece and caretaker, Michele Bertrand. Each handwritten copy of the Bible took more than a year to complete. His accomplishment was remarkable. Dick was a past board member of Holy Family Grade School and assisted with RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) at St. Ambrose Parish.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to his church, St. Ambrose, Des Moines or the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
Condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

I met Dick in 1996 when I attended the Christ Renews His Parish weekend at St. Ambrose. I was so touched by Dick and the guys in his group that I became a team member. I was honored to hear Dick's powerful witness about his life and his continued faith in the church. My last CRHP weekend, Dick gave out pictures to the participants and team members of what appears to be Jesus walking into the clouds. I will always treasure that picture and the time I spent with Dick. RIP and God Bless!

MODIFIED: We are so sorry to hear of Richard's passing. I last saw him at a Saydel reunion (too many years ago) and asked him to join our table. We as a neighborhood group attended Sr CE (Christian Endeavor.) We loudly sang "This World is Not My Home" and Richard played chess with some of the boys. In my earlier youth, your wonderful mother taught my Sunday School class. Both mine and my youngest sister, Sandie Murphy Heitter's hearts go out to your family. We lost middle sister Karen Murphy Jensen to cancer in March of 2017. Our mother had her 100th Birthday on 4-10-2018. Again we are so sorry for your loss. Jan & Sandie.
