Terry R. "Smoke" Stewart
July 04, 2018
“Smoke” Stewart passed away on July 4, 2018 surrounded by his family at the age of 70. He leaves behind a family who will miss his “bigger than life” character, his humor and his love.
Smoke was born December 3, 1947, the son of Alma and John Stewart. He was a great baseball player, playing in Little League through high school ball at North High School where he was a 1966 graduate.
Smoke began teaching at computer education school at the age of 19. From there he went to work for Coors in Golden, CO as a payroll analyst. At an early age with his entrepreneurial spirit he went into the bar business in Las Vegas, Denver and finally in Ankeny. After selling his bar he went into the dry wall business. He then started his own company, Stewart Construction Service. Smoke retired in 2016.
Smoke loved boats, cars, good wine and spending time with his family and friends. He leaves behind his wife, Moni with whom he enjoyed 23 years of traveling and new adventures. They were soul mates from the start. He never missed a day in reminding her how much he loved her. Smoke is also survived by his daughters, Angie (Jeff) Hockett and Deb Stutchel, stepson, Brandon (Tara) DeGroote, and step-daughter, Shannon (Ryan) Mahnke; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; his sister, Lila Jane; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, John Stewart and brother, Tom Stewart.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Izaak Walton League, 4343 George Flagg Pkwy, Des Moines with food and beverages to be provided.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Muscular Dystrophy Association at www.mda.org or the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org. Online condolences may be directed to www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.
We will miss our Smoke. He was a loved and respected husband, dad, papa and friend to many.

The halls of North High are diminished with Smoke's passing. Prayers and thoughts to his family and friends. Smoke's 1966 North High class page can be viewed by going to my North High website, ndmhs.com, selecting "allyears" and then the year 1966.

I haven't seen my old buddy in several years but it is always with fond memories when I think of his charming lounge in Ankeny and him bartending the crowd. He was and is one of the good ones. RIP, pal.

Smoke was simply a wonderful guy with whom you could always find a smile or a chuckle about even the toughest things of the day. I got to spend a lot more time with him in the last year, and I'm darn thankful I did. I'm going to miss walking into their house and not seeing him sitting in his favorite chair reading a good a novel and reaching out his hand to welcome me to his home. Go well, buddy. Enjoy that Viper on the other side.
