Velta Darling

Velta Ellen Darling, age 91, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 1, 2018, at The Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee.

Velta was born September 25, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa to Emmett and Jane (Dickson) Willis. She was a lifelong resident of the Des Moines area. Velta served as the dispatcher for the family business, Bob’s Towing, for 30 years. Velta and her husband, Bobby had two children, Bobby Darling, Jr. and Kathy (Darling) McMains. She had twelve sisters, and enjoyed keeping in touch with them and her many nieces and nephews - sharing stories, recipes, photos, and getting together for Christmas parties and family reunions. She loved to crochet and make items for friends and family members, items they will continue to cherish in remembrance of her. She loved spending time with her grandchildren; family was everything to her.

She is survived by her son, Bobby (Marilyn) Darling, Jr.; son-in-law, Bob McMains; grandchildren, Micheal (Teri) Darling, Kelly (David) McIntosh, Billy (Ashley) Darling, Danny (Diane) McMains, Krissy (Tom) Stoll; fifteen great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and five sisters.

Velta was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Darling, Sr.; daughter, Kathleen McMains; parents, Emmett and Jane Willis; and seven sisters.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 5th, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 6th, also at Hamilton’s, and will conclude with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
