LaVerne V. Gonnerman

LaVerne Virgil Gonnerman, 82, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 21, 2018. He was born January 16, 1936, in Dysart, Iowa to Charles J. and Marie A. (Winter) Gonnerman. He graduated from Dysart High School, Westmar College in Le Mars, IA, and Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, IA. He proudly served in the U. S. Army Reserves from 1958-64. LaVerne worked as a custodian and a pastor, most recently with Hy-Vee, where he embodied their motto of “a helpful smile in every aisle,” retiring in 2011.
LaVerne married Esther Joan Hoffman on February 21, 1958. They celebrated 60 years together. He enjoyed fishing, working with wood, and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Dallas Cowboys. He loved to sing and serve the Lord as a member of Ankeny Baptist Church.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at Ankeny Baptist Church, 2842 SW 3rd St. Pl., Ankeny. Funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 27, also at the church. Interment with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter.
LaVerne is survived by his wife of 60 years, Esther; sons, Daniel (Brenda) Gonnerman and David (Robyn) Gonnerman; daughters, Darla (Dennis) Green and Denise (Jeff) VanderMeyden; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, VirJean Gonnerman; and brothers, Gus, Dean, Gary and Allen Gonnerman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Marie Gonnerman and five sisters.
In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be directed to the family in memory of LaVerne.
