Lowell G. Dunkin
June 15, 2018
Lowell G. Dunkin, 80, of Des Moines, died on Friday, June 15, 2018. He will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
Lowell was the son of Dorothy and Harlan Dunkin. He was raised outside of Lovilla, IA where he graduated in 1956. Upon graduation he moved to Des Moines, IA where he met the love of his life, Beverly A. Dunkin, and the two were married at the Swan Christian Church in 1958. They settled on the East Side of Des Moines soon after where they raised their two sons.
Lowell exceled in his career as a salesman, employed by Midstates Ford and later Freightliner until his retirement. Lowell enjoyed many summer vacations with his kids and grandkids on the shores of Clear Lake and several weeks a year in warm snow free San Diego, CA with Beverly during the Iowa winters. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and would never miss a game tuning in on WHO radio while watching the game with the TV muted. Following retirement, he spent his free time gardening, raising and showing chickens, and spending time with his grandkids and great-grandkids. Though Lowell had a tough exterior he would do anything for his family.
Lowell’s legacy as a strong, stubborn, generous, and loving person will be remembered and cherished by his sons, Randy D. Dunkin (Lisa Sanchez) of Des Moines and Kevin L. Dunkin of Florida; grandchildren, Benjamin J. (Mandi) Dunkin of Ankeny, Jeremy D. Dunkin of Phoenix, AZ, Jenna L. “Sissy” Dunkin of Des Moines, and Krista Dunkin of California; great-grandchildren, Hayden L. Zubulake, Averi Jo & Knox Joseph Dunkin; sisters, Katherine Thomas of Albia and Beverly Hugen of Lovilla; brother, Wendell (Linda) of Des Moines; “adopted” grandchildren, Casey Turner and Charley Wheeler, both of Des Moines; several nieces and nephews; and many extended family members, friends, and neighbors.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, followed by a graveside service at the Swan Cemetery.
Charitable contributions in memory of Lowell may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association Iowa Chapter, 1730 28th Street, West Des Moines, IA 50266, www.alz.org/greateriowa or to a charity of your choice.

Lowell was my neighbor at Stover Heights. We watched many hawkeye games together. We would always compare our flowers every spring. He was an outstanding friend and was there if I needed advice. I will miss him greatly

It is with great sadness to hear of the passing of Lowell. I had talked to him just a few weeks ago on the phone. Lowell and Beverly where the nicest people you ever wanted to meet. They really made a Georgia boy feel welcome at their place. I know he is with Beverly now and happy again. He will be missed dearly. My prayers for Ben and the whole family. It was true honor to have him as a friend

Ben~I knew both your grandparents & they were a hoot to be around. I liked going over to their home around Christmas time to see the many decorations. Lowell was a gentle giant & I made sure to stay on his good side. I am sorry for your loss.
