Chad L. Williams
June 11, 2018
Chad L. Williams was born on June 17, 1942 to Charles “Tiny” and Esther (Hoogenakker) Williams in Des Moines, Iowa. He grew up going to Luther League, playing baseball, and having fun with his extended family. Chad graduated from North High School in Des Moines. He went on to Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, graduating in 1964 and then attending the University of Iowa Medical School in Iowa City. In 6th grade he met the love of his life, Karen Lingwall. They were married in 1965 and traveled throughout the US for his medical training. During this time, he also served as a Naval doctor at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California. In 1975 they returned to Des Moines and he began a career at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. While there he was instrumental in getting the Cath Lab started and in running the residency program. He was one of the first modern invasive cardiologists at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. At age 55, Chad retired for the first time and he and Karen traveled the globe, often returning to Hawaii and Paris. They also served on a medical mission to Zimbabwe. Chad went back to work part time at the University of Iowa for 13 years, running outpatient clinics and working with cardiology fellows. He finally retired again in 2014.
Chad was an avid fisherman and family man. He spent summers at their lake home in Park Rapids, Minnesota, teaching his grandchildren to fish, playing cards and games, and relaxing. He loved to go on fishing trips with friends and family, bringing home lots of stories and fish.
He is survived by his wife Karen; children Lynne Mitchell (Kenny Barnes), Lisa (Rob) Morgan, Mark (Claire) Williams, and Matt (Shana) Williams; grandchildren Andrea and Erin Mitchell, Lindsay (Jason) Carolfi, Kiley (Katie) Morgan, Lexi, Jameson, and Aidan Morgan, and Siri Williams; great-grandchildren Sofia, Savannah, and Shyanne Carolfi; and many extended family members. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother and sister-in-law Roger and Shirley Williams. The family would like to thank Dr. T. Buroker and the staff on Powell 3 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center for their exemplary care during this difficult time and Dr. Inga Lennes, niece, for her invaluable wisdom and support.
Services will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Saint Mark Lutheran Church, 1115 Grand Avenue, West Des Moines with visitation from 9:45 to 11:00 a.m. and funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mark Lutheran Church or University of Iowa Cardiology Fellowships.

Chad was a wonderful colleague and a great friend. Since his retirement he would periodically stop in and it was always a pleasure to see him. We will miss him at UIHC.

Prior to his first retirement, Chad was a long time participant in our Monday Nite Tennis (formerly Ike's Tennis Group) group that played indoors during the fall to spring season. What a great guy. We always enjoyed visiting with him on his return to town.

I am grieving with Karen and family for the untimely death of Chad. He was a beautiful person and compassionate doctor. Although we lost touch over the years I will always remember the wonderful long conversation I had with Chad in 2012 at Karen's and my NHS class reunion. I will be forever grateful for having known Chad.

Our deepest and most sincere prayers and Love go with you and your beautiful family in this time of grief. Someone already said it too, may we take some of your pain away with you knowing you are not alone but totally surrounded in Love. I went through Jr. High and North High School with you, and your sister.
