Service Details

Lt. Colonel Hubert Ora West passed away Saturday, July 19, 2008. The youngest of four children born to Stephen Ora and Sadie Edna Oglevie West of Polk County, Iowa, he was born February 25, 1919 on a farm Southwest of Altoona, Iowa. He was united in marriage with Mary Margaret Bartram on April 1, 1945. To this union 6 children were born; Mary Margaret West Wilson, her husband Richard, Jean Ann West Feldman, her husband Allen, Sandra Kay who died young, Karin Sue West Work, her husband William “Bill”, Debra Louise West Hardesty, her husband Nicholas “Gene”, and Stephen Thomas West who died in infancy.
Hubert retired from the U.S. Army on December 1, 1967, after serving over 28 years, having entered the service of his country as a Private in the 113th Cavalry, Iowa, National Guard. He received his Commission during the closing days of World War II, and retired as a Lt. Colonel. During his service he had many assignments in Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and in the United States. He was a graduate of The Infantry School, The Artillery School, and The Command and General Staff College.
Lt. Colonel West’s grandparents on both his fathers and mothers side were among the earliest settlers in Polk County, Iowa. His grandparental ancestors served their country during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Spanish American War.
In addition to his children he is survived by 7 grandchildren; Kristina Wilson Land, her husband Patrick, Susan Work, Stephanie Work, Shelia Work Deese, her husband Chad, Elizabeth Hardesty Heightchew, her husband Steven, Nicholas Hardesty, Sara Feldman and 6 great-grandchildren; Madison Land, Alexandria Lopez, Autumn Lopez, Zoe Deese, Sarah Heightchew, and Jacob Heightchew.
Visitation will be 5-8 pm Monday at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway and 5-8 p.m. CST, Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. CST, Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th St SW, Altoona, Iowa; burial will follow at Rising Sun Cemetery.
