Marlene Wheeler

Marlene Joan Wheeler, 80, passed away peacefully May 6, 2018 at Prairie Vista Village. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th St. SW, Altoona. Visitation will be 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Dale; sons, Mark (Lisa) of Inwood, IA and Michael (Sherie) of Le Claire, IA; 4 grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Erma Hellyer and Raymond Roberts; brother, Bill Roberts; and stepfather, Ivan Hellyer.

Marlene was born February 16, 1938 in Millerton, IA and moved to Des Moines 11 years later with her mother and stepfather. She graduated from East High in 1956. In addition to being a stay-at-home Mom, she worked 20+ years in accounting offices during the tax season. Marlene thoroughly enjoyed live music, travel, going to the movies, and seeing the grandchildren and great-grandchildren play and grow!

She had special feelings for her in-laws, Ray and Martha Smith, Dennis and Mary Wheeler, Jim and Betsie Wheeler, as well as dear friends of many years.

She very much enjoyed the friends and neighbors she met in the last four years at Prairie Vista. Her family would also like to acknowledge the kind and compassionate care she received in her final months while in the Prairie Vista Care Facility.
