Mary Lou Stevens
May 02, 2018
Mary Lou Stevens, 72, passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Valley View Village in Des Moines.
Mary Lou was born in Leavenworth, Kansas on November 26, 1945 to Luish and Marian (Haynes) Myer. She married Donald Stevens nearly 60 years ago, and made a home with him for their three children. Besides being a homemaker, Mary worked in the cafeteria at Dowling High School for many years and at Younkers Department Store for 14 years.
Mary loved spending time with her family and friends. She loved talking on the telephone, and keeping in touch with everyone. Mary loved Pepsi and enjoyed cooking. Her homemade beef and noodles were legendary, and no holiday was complete without her and dad’s homemade peanut butter fudge. Mary loved pets, including her dogs Tippy, Sandy and Shadow. She loved crafts, going to craft shows, painting ceramics, going shopping for clothes and jewelry, and getting her hair and nails done. Mary was a huge Elvis Presley fan, loved music of all kinds, and had many vinyl records. She was known for her beautiful cursive handwriting and was always ready to assist, if anything needed written. Mary Lou loved life and had a smile that lit up the room. She had a great laugh like no one else, and an incredible sense of humor that sustained her through good times and bad.
Mary Lou is survived by her husband, Donald L.Stevens; three children, Michael (Paula) Stevens, Jill (Dana) Knowler and Donald W. Stevens; five grandchildren, Emily, Elizabeth, Alisha, Ty and Paige; and two great-grandchildren, Keaton and Kinsley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Luish and Marian; twin infant sisters, Judith and JoAnn; and her great-grandmother, Blanche.
The family will greet friends Monday, May 7, 2018 from 5 to 7 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 7 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Mary will be laid to rest at Avon Cemetery.

Don & beautiful family,
Heaven has gained another Angel, I love this beautiful soul, she had a heart of gold and she loved her family full heartedly. I will treasure all the special fun filled sweet memories we shared at Younkers and outside of
work ..She was so known for her beautiful smile, it lit up the room and the world. She had a sweet laugh that was contagious, a love for pretty things, beautiful flowers and always having her manicures and pedicures which were great memories. She loved life, her husband, family & Shadow. She is smiling down from heaven & dancing with the angels in her flower garden. Thoughts & Prayers lifting up for you and the whole family. May God give you all love, comfort & peace that surpasses all understanding and may you lean on him for strength & comfort.
Love,
Lisa Marie & Isaac
