William "Bill" Dickenson
June 20, 2008
William A. Dickenson passed away Friday, June 20, 2008 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Bill was born July 17, 1947 to Filmore and Carmelita Dickenson in St. Edward, Nebraska.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Emily (Garlock) Dickenson; daughter, Jennifer Fisher (Rob) of Lincoln, Nebraska; son, Mark Dickenson of Lincoln, Nebraska; step-daughter, Tiffany Garlock of Des Moines, Iowa; four grandchildren, Sydney, Isabella, Paityn, and Porter; brother, Jerry Dickenson of St. Ann, Missouri; sister, Marge Prorok of Ankeny, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
Bill graduated from the University of Kearney, in Kearney, Nebraska. He later began a 30 year career with Nationwide Insurance/Nationwide Agri Business, retiring as their Loss Control Manager in 2007. He was the former President and on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Illinois Safety Council and former President of the American Safety Society of Engineering.
Together, with Emily, Bill was able to find true love and happiness and to live his dreams of traveling abroad, boating on the gulf, enjoying life and laughing all the way. Bill was so fun and could make everyone laugh. He loved his wife, children, and grandchildren unconditionally, as well as his dog, Max. He will be missed so much as a husband, father, and grandfather. He is preceded in death by both of his parents.
Bill loved spending time in the ocean and his wishes were to be cremated and have his remains scattered there.
Memorial Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave.. Visitation will be Monday, June 23, 2008 from 5 – 7 p.m. with a scripture service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

My condolence to Bill's family is heartfelt. I have known Bill since he was a small baby and he always seemed a part of our family. We always loved him and found joy in his great nature and will miss him immensely. Our sadness cannot be measured, his memory will be with us always. God speed, dear Bill, and may the Lord's perpetual light always shine upon you.

I'll never forget the times when I got to drive my Papa's boat. He took me to Florida and I will never forget the time when I got to hold the baby alligator. He was always happy and fun. He had a good attitude about everything. I'll never forget him and I'll send lots of balloons up to heaven to my Papa.
I love you!

My thoughts and prayers go out to you, Emily, and to the family. I know you will miss Bill mightily. We all will.
Bill had a penchant for making you enjoy life, even as he did. His devilish sense of humor and charming demeanor could lighten up your darkest day. Even now, thinking of some of the interactions I had with him brings a smile and a fond remembrance. It was my pleasure and honor to have worked with Bill at Nationwide Agribusiness and to call him friend.
Bill, I hate to see you go. Thanks for everything. Rest easy now, partner.

I am Billy's half-niece (if that's a word?). My mother, Beverly Dickenson St. Clair, was Billy's half-sister. We are all very sad to hear that Billy died. We did not even know that he was sick, so it came as quite a shock. Especially at such a young age!
His Texas family will miss him.

Bill and I went to Kearney State College at the same time, although we didn't meet each other until we both worked at Allied Insurance in Des Moines.
I worked in the Training department at Allied, and developed several classes for Bill and his team.
Bill's great sense of humor made him a favorite among the people in my department. Whenever he visited our area of the building, he left us all smiling and laughing.
I was glad to hear Bill was able to spend his last years doing the things he loved to do and spending his time with the people he loved.
Everyone who knew him will really miss his great spirit.

My favorite Uncle "Billy" I knew nothing of any health problems. What a shock this is to me!!
"60's The Good Ole Days" It seemed like we were in St Edward, Ne (where the Dickensons grew up)visiting every Sunday when I was a little girl. It was awesome. Billy teased me to no end. Billy & Jerry had a special little room in the basement with a sign on the door "Keep Out" Being curious I always went in and got into their stuff(and always got caught). Quite often he would be up at the swimming pool with his friends. I always walked up later to join him. That pool was always so cold! At the park, he would spin me so fast on the Merry Go Round I could hardly stay on. We laughed so hard. The Water Melon Feed, Family Reunions in the park and so many other fun times. I will never forget those days. Billy was 7 years older than me and not realizing at the time, that he was taking his time away from his teenage days to spend with me. I Love you Billy and will always cherish my memories of you! You will be missed so much.

I was so surprised to hear about my uncle Billy. He will be missed. When someone passes you always try to think of things from the past that went on with you and that person that make you laugh. I don't know why this came to mind but it did. We were at a family reunion and Billy and Jerry found some certain kind of stick that when you lit it with a match you could smoke it. Shelley and I thought this was pretty neat. for some reason I never forgot that. Another thing I remember was when we went to St.Ed and Billy would take us for a ride around town I felt so proud because my uncle Billy was very popular and alot of girls would stop and talk to him but it was his nieces Candy, Shelley, and Deb who he was giving the ride to.I will always hold a special place in my heart for him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Jerry,Marge, Mark,Jennifer,Emily and families. Love Mary Ann and Deb and Family

So sorry to hear of Bill's passing. Bill was a co worker of mine at Allied Insurance and was one of the main people who made me feel at home when I started with Allied in 2000. I enjoyed having someone so easy to talk to and who I could always count on to make me laugh, just when I needed it throughout the work week (along with those lunch trips to Pablo's on the skywalk).
When I made my first work trip to the Allied Pacific Coast Regional Office which at the time was split between two offices in Sacramento and Santa Rosa, CA, I was certainly nervous having never been to the area before. Bill talked to me about how the company encouraged weekend stay overs to save money on airfare & that I should take advantage of it to see a really beautiful part of the country. He then offered to pick me up at the Sacramento airport and drive through wine country showing me the sites on our way to the Santa Rosa office. It was a laugh a minute trip that I really enjoyed and helped make my first visit to this office much less nerve racking. I wonder what Bill's boss ever said to him about that dinner tab we racked up at one stop along the way!
My thoughts and prayers to all of Bill's family. I will carry many fond memories of Bill with me and I hope yours will carry you through this difficult time.

We send our deepest sympathy to your family, on the death of a friend.
We were also born and raised in St. Edward, and graduated from SEHS. We both remember "Bill" as full of smiles and his friendly manner. We are so sorry to hear of his passing.
We just spent some time with his nephew, Danny, at the SEHS Alumni.

Emily,Jerry, Margie,Jenny and Mark,
My heart goes out to all of you for the loss of your husband, brother and father and my little step-brother.
My Pastor in this mornings message talked of families having hard feelings and hurt over things that we have no control over. Made me stop and think of our family. Too late unfortuntely for Bill and me. Maybe when he gets up there with our Dad, our 2 brothers,Moon and Churn, his Mom, my son Tim, they will have a Heavenly discussion about how families should stick together.
In the mean time, know I'm thinking about all of you and wish I could be there to help with the pain I know all of you are suffering.

We just wanted to say how sorry we were to hear about Bill's passing -- we have so many fond memories of the "good old days" at Allied. Bill taught me (Mark) everything I know about loss control (i.e. where all the best salad bars are in town -- ha ha), and was really a lot of fun to be around. Definitely one of the nicest guys I ever met - he always had a smile on his face, and a trick up his sleeve.
I remember at this one conference in Des Moines he was writing notes on Allied letterhead and signing them with the Allied President's name. During break he placed one at a fellow co-worker's spot (Loren Sweigard), and when we came back from break Loren read it, and remained very quiet the remainder of the morning. At lunch he seemed really down, and when Bill asked him what was going on, he said he got a note from the president of Allied that stated they were very disappointed in his performance, and he thought he might have to look at a different career path. Bill and the other guys let him sweat a little, then filled him in on the joke. One of many examples of Bill's great sense of humor --- we will really miss him, and we are so lucky to have known him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I was shocked and very sad about Bill's passing. He was a great step dad. I really enjoyed him coming and watching my games in High School and College. I haven't seen Bill in about 10 years but he was a big part of my life growing up and I will miss him very much.
