Frederick “Fritz” Bierhaus, 87, died Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at the Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House. Funeral services will be 2pm Friday, June 20th at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home with burial 1pm Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery in Franklin, Nebraska.
Fritz was born in Campbell, NE to Carl and Norma Bierhaus on February 21, 1921. At a young age his father moved the family to Franklin where Fritz grew up and reached adulthood. Fritz attended the National School of Meat Cutting in 1938 in Toledo, OH. He enlisted in the CPT and WTS Pilot training in 1942 and graduated with his wings on Feb. 1, 1945 in Misson, TX. He was flying P-51’s in Venice, FL when WWII ended. On Jan. 14, 1951 he married Libby Pospisil. He was recalled for the Korean War on March 10, 1951 and was stationed in Colorado Springs flying C-47’s. His son Steven was born at Camp Carson, CO on Oct.19, 1952. Fritz cut meat for Herb and Paige IGA store in Holdredge, NE for 3 years. He then attended the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City and worked as a flight service specialist in Imperial, NE for 13 years. He was transferred to Des Moines and retired there in 1981. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge. Fritz enjoyed R.V. ‘ing and making new friends as well as hunting and was an avid Husker fan.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Libby, his son Steven (Peggy) Bierhaus of Norfolk, NE and his grandson Adam (Sara) Bierhaus of Grand Island, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Jean Blank.
