Everett Sheldahl, 94, passed away June 16, 2008 at Taylor House in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born January 10, 1914 on a farm near Huxley, Iowa, to Howard and Matilda (Fatland) Sheldahl. Everett graduated from Huxley High School in 1931. On August 29, 1935, he married his wife of 68 years, Faye Kaltenheuser. Together they farmed near Elkhart and Polk City. In 1956 Everett went to work for the Iowa State Department of Revenue, eventually becoming the Director of Sales and Use Tax for 10 years. In 1979 Everett and Faye retired to Delaware, Arkansas, where they enjoyed 13 years of retirement before moving to Albia, Iowa in 1992.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Faye, as well as sisters Joanne, Amanda, Vivian and Esther, and his brother Hubert. He is survived by siblings, David (Pat) of Milan, IL, Helen (Ray) Crowe of Cassville, MO; two sons, Tom (Mary) of West Des Moines and Terry (Mary Jane) of Savannah, GA; grandsons, Jon (Kris) of Ottumwa, James (Renee) of Yuma, AZ and Christopher (Angela) of Chapel Hill, NC; and five great-grandchildren.
Everett was an avid gardener and an active member of the Democratic Party. While in Polk City, he served as School Board President, City Clerk and a charter member of Polk City Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, most recently attending Saint Timothy’s Episcopal Church.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008 at Saint Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 1020 24th St., West Des Moines. Burial will follow at 1:30pm at Byers Cemetery in Elkhart.
