Roger “Gus” Gustafson, 70, died June 10, 2008 at The Kavanagh House on 56th St. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Roger was born June 9, 1938 to Clarence and Hazel Gustafson in St. Paul, Minnesota. He worked for the City of Des Moines for 31 years before his retirement in 1998.
Roger is survived by his children, Roger Gustafson, Rick (Teresa) Gustafson and Cindy Latcham (Brian Pettiecord); sisters, Lois Hatcher and Millie Dalen; grandchildren, Lindsey, Tyler, Erica, Kyle and Emily; and great-grandson, Mason. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gordy; and sisters, Margaret, Alice, Joanne and Arlene.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.

Dear Roger, Rick, and Cindy,
We are sorry that your dad had to struggle so long with his illness, and we are saddened to hear that he has died. When our mother, Margaret, his sister, died we took time to share our memories of her and it brought us great comfort. I hope that you get a chance to do the same.
While we will not be able to attend his funeral, our thoughts will be with you as you lay him to rest.

My deepest sympathies are extended to Roger's family and friends. Years ago my mother Alice (Ek) Shoop and I took a trip to Des Moines to see Aunt Hazel. My mother and Hazel were half sisters. They had the same father-Charles Ek.I remember Roger being a teenager so I must have been 7 or 8 at the time. I remember them living in a big older home with lots of large, shady trees.
It is too bad that we did not get to meet or see this side of the family very often. Distance and being involved with our own families will do that.
I will keep you all in my prayers tomorrow and in the days and weeks to come as you grieve the loss of your father, grandfather, brother and friend.

Dear Roger, Rick, Cindy and families,
I am so thankful to have seen your dad two summers ago at a family gathering. He
showed me pictures of all three of you and your children and your homes. He was
very proud of each of you. Even then he carried oxygen with him and so I imagine he
had struggled with his health for quite some time.
May you sense God's loving presence and His comfort during the days ahead. I trust
that you will also have opportunity to reflect on pleasant memories with your dad.
I am so sorry that we will not be able to attend the funeral, but you all will be in
our thoughts and prayers.

PS As Sue mentioned, your dad helped care for our mom, Alice, during her illness. I
will never forget his acts of kindness toward her before her death.

Roger, Rick and Cindy, I am so sorry to hear about the passing of
your dad. I know this is a difficult time for the three of you
and your families. I will always remember Uncle Roger fondly as
he was such a comfort to us when my mom was ill.
