Marvel May Ryan
April 29, 2018
Marvel May (Mann) Ryan was born September 13, 1929, in Nashville, Minnesota, the daughter of Howard A. and Irene M. (Kettner) Mann. She had made the Des Moines area her home since 1960. Marvel married James Ryan in Indianola in 1973. She was the glue that held her family together over the years. Marvel was a very caring person with a gentle and calming spirit, but she was never afraid to speak her mind. She adored her time with her grandchildren and always had a lap to sit on and a hug waiting for them. She was always one to remember a birthday or special occasion and would faithfully send a card.
Marvel worked as an LPN for 39 years. She was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary #109. Her interests were varied. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting and listening to country and gospel music. She enjoyed watching sports and never missed a chance to cheer on her Minnesota Vikings. Marvel was an avid bowler, enjoyed gardening, and liked taking cruises, especially to Hawaii.
Marvel passed away in the comfort of her own home on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at the age of 88.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Nita (Larry) Noble, Dan (Cathy) Pettijohn, Dale (JoAnn) Pettijohn, Beccah Pettijohn, and Lori (Jon) Wetlaufer; grandchildren, Derek, Skye, DeeDee, Jennifer, Dale Jr. “DJ”, Aaron, Tian, Levi and Madison; and many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Marvel was preceded in death by her husband, James Ryan; parents, Howard and Irene Mann; son, Douglas Pettijohn; and four siblings.
There will be a celebration of Marvel’s life on Thursday, May 3, 2018, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Marvel will be laid to rest at Laurel Hill Cemetery after services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Marvel.
