Raymond Bryce (R.B.) Spencer

R.B. (Raymond Bryce) Spencer, 78, passed away March 5, 2018, at Mercy Hospice House in Johnston, IA. A Memorial Service will be held, at 2:00 PM Monday, March 19, 2018, at Hamilton's near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines, IA. Burial Service to follow on May 25, 2018, at Greenlawn Cemetery, Afton, IA.

R.B. was born October 2, 1939, in Creston, IA to W. Bryce and Freeda (Taylor) Spencer of Afton, IA. He was a graduate of Afton High School and later joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served 4-years as a helicopter crew chief in the reserves.

He and his wife Gretchen were married August 8, 1964, and made their home in Yorba Linda, CA. One of R.B’s greatest joys was their son Bryce, born September 24, 1965. They shared many interests and hobbies and enjoyed doing everything together.

After 25 years with Orange County Food Service, R.B. retired and turned his life-long love of classic auto restoration into R.B.'s Autos, and the business allowed him to enjoy a second successful career. To his delight, his Corvettes won trophies and his restoration projects were photographed for magazine publication. He also loved motocross racing and made a hobby of owning and racing motorcycles.

He is survived by his wife Gretchen, son Bryce, brother Stanford, sister-in-law Emily and niece Lynn Wheeler.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials honoring him may be directed to Mercy Hospice House in Johnston, IA or the Animal Rescue League of Des Moines.
