Betty Belle (Bien) Dyer, 93, passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, surrounded by her family and friends. She was born March 23, 1924, in Princeton, MO, to Charles E. and Mamie L. (George) Bien. Betty grew up in Princeton and moved to Rock Island, IL in 1945. She married her husband, Melvin M. “Max” Dyer, on April 7, 1949. They moved to Des Moines, IA in 1955. They were happily married for 50 years prior to Max’s death. Betty worked for insurance companies in both Rock Island, IL and Des Moines, IA. She retired in 1986 from Employers Mutual after 16 years of employment. Betty enjoyed reading her Bible, working, and traveling with her husband. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and caring for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty touched the lives of everyone she met.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Terri (Dyer) Gathercole (Kirk) of Corydon, IA and Larry Dyer of Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Brice Gathercole (Susan) of Colfax, IA and Cortney Van Haaften (Jason) of Pella, IA, great-grandchildren, Aaron Gathercole, Zach Gathercole, Brandie Van Haaften, Billy Van Haaften, Shelby Gathercole, Kaleena Van Haaften and MaKenna Van Haaften; great-great-granddaughters, Hazel and Elaina Gathercole and Paisley Van Haaften; and her sisters, Carrie Fears and Katherine Ahmann (Vern) of Winslow, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Max; parents, Charles and Mamie Bien; brothers, Eugene, Virden, Forst and Eddie Bien and one brother in infancy; and her sisters, Shirley Mercer, Pauline Taylor and Phyllis Callen.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, January 29, 2018, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m., Tuesday, January 30, also at Hamilton’s, and will conclude with burial at Corydon Cemetery in Corydon, IA.
