Verna Jean Johnson passed away at the age 82 on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines.

Verna was born in Des Moines, Iowa on March 11, 1935. She attended Des Moines Public School and graduated from Ankeny High School, where she played basketball, ran track, and played the piano.

Verna enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved to go fishing, playing cards, tending to her rose garden, and loved going to the Center, that’s what she called it.

Those left to cherish her memory include her partner in life, Darlene; her children, Craig, Kevin, Tracy, Kelly, Tohamd, Tracy, Tremane, Tyrone, and Tyrell; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; siblings, Tyrone (Rocky) Sylvia, Veda, Michelle Weston, Sam, Sandra, Marsha, Sharon, and Michael all of St. Louis, MO; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and family & friends.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Christine Weston; son, Tyrone Johnson; and her great-granddaughter, Jayda Canada.

Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Morning Star Baptist Church, 3322 East 25th St., Des Moines.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Verna.

God’s Garden

God looked around his garden

It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone
