Velma Blanchard

Velma (Jennings) Blanchard was born April 8, 1937, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Raymond and Myrtle E. (Money) Jennings. She was a very caring wife and mother. Family was very important to her and she loved getting together with her sister to play cards. Velma was a fantastic cook and enjoyed baking and cooking. She also enjoyed watching cooking shows on TV. Some of her favorite pastimes included camping, fishing, traveling and watching British comedy TV shows.
Velma was a strong woman and she was a fighter until the end. She passed away peacefully Thursday, January 11, 2018, with her family by her side. She was 80 years old.
Velma is survived by her children, Michael (Tina) Blanchard, Greg Parsons, Diana (Carl) Brown, and Ginger Patterson; grandchildren, Johnny (Pauletta), Matt (Lindsay), and Alisa; 8 great-grandchildren; and many other extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Myrtle Jennings; husband, John Blanchard; and her sisters, Norma, Wilma, and Gloria.
Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, and will conclude with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service. Reception at Hamilton’s Funeral Home will follow the burial.
