Carolyn Joyce Thompson was born September 19, 1932, to Leonard and Anna (Schonhorst) Thompson, in Story County. She was raised in the Huxley area her entire life, and graduated from Huxley High School in the class of 1950. She worked at Zales for a year following graduation.
On May 12, 1951, Carolyn married the love of her life, William (Bill) Edward Frederick, Jr. They were married for 66 beautiful years. Shortly after their wedding, Bill was drafted into the Army. Carolyn followed him to Oklahoma and Kansas until he was sent to Germany. During his deployment, she returned to Iowa to live with her parents, in her childhood home.
Bill and Carolyn were blessed with a daughter, Vicki Lynn, in 1952. They made their home in the Elkhart and Huxley areas. Carolyn was a housewife and helped on the farm, sometimes driving the tractor, until 1964, when she began her 22-year career in the Accounting Department at John Deere, Ankeny. Upon her retirement from John Deere in 1986, she worked as a food sample demonstrator, and as a market researcher for Mid-Iowa Interviewing, where she made many new friends.
The couple enjoyed traveling. They took trips to Hawaii, Rio de Janeiro, Spain, Mexico, and Canada, as well as two cruises that took them to San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. Martin, Haiti, Jamaica, and Santo Domingo. They loved their yearly trips to Las Vegas.
Carolyn loved her family and friends, and delighted in entertaining them. She was an excellent cook and baker. Her family will always remember her specialty, strawberry pie. She was involved in women’s clubs and couple’s card clubs until her passing. She loved everyone, and everyone loved her. She was also a lifetime member of Salem United Church of Christ in Alleman, Iowa, where she was baptized, confirmed, married, and enjoyed serving the church in many capacities.
Carolyn will be deeply missed by her husband, Bill; daughter, Vicki (Ike) Moeckly, Ankeny; granddaughters, Gina Vernon, Ankeny, and Alyson (Steve) Whalen, Coon Rapids, MN; great-grandchildren, Chloe Whalen, Carter Whalen, Max Vernon, Cody Whalen, Cooper Pratt and Stone Pratt; sister, Audrey (Dick) Miller, Ankeny; sisters-in-law, Jerry Bagley, Shirley Barkley, Patty (John) Schiefer; brother-in-law, Raymond (Linda) Frederick; many nieces and nephews.
