Michael E. McKay

Michael Edward McKay, 74, passed away on Monday, December 4, 2017.

Mike was born March 21, 1943, to George Oliver McKay and Geraldine Dixon McKay. He was the fifth child in birth order. He graduated from North High School in Des Moines. Mike was hired in 1969 to Northwestern Bell and continued to work there for 33 years until his retirement from now Qwest, in 2002. He loved retirement and made the most of it. He was an avid sports fan and loved fishing and golfing. Mike cherished his role as mentor to his children and his grandchildren. He was very outgoing and made friends everywhere he went. He enjoyed trips to Prairie Meadows and like to gamble.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Carlotta Burks-McKay; children, Michael McKay, Jr., Michelle “Mickey” McKay, Marka McKay, Brandi Ruffin (Edward), Michaela Arrington (Glenn), Angel Wolder, Kelly Burks and Nikki Burks (Robert); grandchildren, Michael III, Chelcie, Leon, Timica, Kadesha, Brandiunna, Edward III, Dayla, Kimora, Dámichael, Savanah, Kelly, Kelleesha and Marlisa; great-grandchildren, Aurieon, Devonta, Damarion, Nylah, Airah and Eva; siblings, Leonna Clayburn, George McKay, Jr., Mickie Baker, Angela Lewis, Christine Jordan and Ramona Moore; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Geraldine McKay; siblings, Mildred “Red”, Wiley, and Constance “Connie”; and grandchild, Leonná.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, December 11, 2017, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 12 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family in loving memory of Mike.
