John Victor Florian
December 04, 2017
John Victor Florian died peacefully in his sleep on December 4, 2017 from complications of cancer. He was 75 years old.
John was born in 1942 in Wyandotte, Michigan to Stella M. Basta and John C. Florian. He was a protector and loving brother to three younger sisters, Estelle, Therese and Georgian. The love of his early life, Diana, whom he married after graduating from Eastern Michigan University, died only a few short months later in a tragic accident.
In 1969 John enlisted, attended Officer Candidate School, and served in the United States Army as a much-decorated combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam, attaining the rank of captain. He struggled the rest of his life with the lack of meaning of his service in a war he ultimately considered monumentally misguided. He often said that every day he lived after serving in Vietnam was a gift.
His marriage to Donna Brough during the war gave him three children – Bryan, David, and Cassandra. In 1991 he married Carol Bamford and became step-father to Leslie Bamford and Todyanna Frakes. John had four grandsons: Dean Florian, Elijah Frakes, Gabriel Frakes, and Ethan Smith. In addition to his human family, John loved his Shelties and cats, who brought him endless joy, companionship, and unconditional love.
After many years in the military and sales, John returned to teaching, the career he originally planned. His years teaching at Roosevelt High School were among the happiest of this life. His students, who affectionately called him J-Flo, became almost like family, and he continued to communicate with many of them up to the time of his death.
John was predeceased by his parents, his favorite uncle Stanley, his sister Therese, his first wife Diana, and his son David. As a young man, John dreamed of a life of adventure. He certainly achieved that, but he came to believe that life’s ultimate adventure is the love we give and receive. He achieved that, too.
Services will take place at a later date in Maui, Hawaii, the home of his sister Georgian, where his ashes will be scattered with those of his sister, Therese. Memorial contributions can be directed to the Jensen Fund at Grand View University.

Our second platoon in OCS received an "Honors" award during our senior status weeks and four of us rented an apartment off- post. I got to know John well during those days. As I recall, he bought a Corvette that week. The army sent us in different directions but I knew John was destined for an interesting and rewarding life. My sympathies to the Florian family. Sincerely, Bill Freebern, 1Lt Inf. 25th I.D.

John and I were roommates for a couple of months during our time at the Infantry Officer Candidate School in 1967. We graduated on November 8, 1967 and didn't cross paths with John until 1968 at Fort Wolters, TX where we were both attending flight school. Great guy and apologize for not contacting him sooner. May your skies be clear blue.

John was one of my dearest and most sincere friends. He told me great stories about his life, in the service, with his family, and later, how much teaching meant to him. He was so proud of his students. I will miss him.

Mr.Florian was such a great teacher. He was one of the few teachers at Roosevelt that really treated us high schoolers as young adults and held us accountable as such. He earned our respect and was equally respected. Sincere condolences to his family and close friends.

J-Flo was one of my favorite teachers I had in high school, and still is one of the most passionate teachers I have been lucky enough to meet over the years. I am so sad to hear about his passing. He was such a wonderful person. He will be very missed.

J-Flo was the best teacher I had in high school and one of the teachers that teaches a lesson in a way you never forget. His poem about snow is one that I could never forget. I am so sad to hear of his passing. The entire family is in my thoughts and prayers.

We are so very sorry to hear of John's passing. We live on 41st and enjoyed chatting with him and Frost as they would walk by. John and my husband also spent some quality time talking about cars. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
