Leona Gladys Phillips

Leona Gladys Phillips passed away peacefully on December 3, 2017 at Bethany Life Manor in Story City, Iowa. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 10:00 am at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, Iowa with visitation occurring one hour prior. Burial will immediately follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Leona was born on December 15, 1939 to Everett and Hazel (Townsley) Jerrel in Cranston, Iowa. She was raised in Mattoon, Illinois and Des Moines, Iowa, but spent most of her years in West Des Moines with the last 24 years in Boone, Iowa. Leona was a loving and giving person with a big heart. She was a member of the Salvation Army Church and the Aktion Club (Kiwanis) in Boone, Iowa. She loved music and singing and spent much of her time planning parties and potlucks with her friends.

Leona is survived by her daughter, Jackie (Sean) Roberts; her grandchildren, Kaitlin, Austin and Lauren Roberts; her brothers, Robert Jerrel, Ronald (Sheryl) Dickey, and Gary (Debbie) Dickey; her sisters, Joyce (Gary) Harper, and Jane Burt; many beloved nieces and nephews; her companion, David Fairchild; and her former husband, Kenneth (Ann) Phillips. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Kevin Lee Phillips; and her sister, Linda (Jack) Rosenbalm.

Leona was active with Genesis Development of Iowa, a non-profit service helping disabled individuals’ since 1973. The family asks that if you wish to give a memorial contribution in lieu of flowers, please direct them to Genesis in Leona’s name.
