Service Details

Betty Gullord, age 77, entered into eternal rest on April 11, 2008, surrounded by her loving family at Kavanagh House in Des Moines, IA. She died from lung cancer after a very brief illness.
Betty Jeanne Willford was born on September 30, 1930 in Plymouth, Iowa. As a young adult, she was a law secretary in Manly, Iowa. She was also a champion roller-skater. On November 17, 1951, she was united in marriage to Stanley Gullord. They had four children and moved to Des Moines in 1966. While her children were growing, she was very involved with them in the PTA, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. In 1968, she began a 33 year career as an income tax preparer. She was self-employed until she retired in 2001. In her leisure time, she enjoyed playing bingo and other forms of gaming, and the Friendship Club. In retirement, she became very active with her church family at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. No matter what was going on, she always found time to watch or listen to the Chicago Cubs games. They lost a great fan who always thought that “This was the year”. Betty always enjoyed making people happy and her smile and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 56 years, Stanley; her daughter, Deb (Tom) Ostrem; her sons, Steve (Susan) and Greg (Roxy); her grandchildren, Jaime (Fernando), Sarah, Chrissy, Jenny, Brett, Matt, and Shelley; cousins; nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandi, who was waiting for her arrival in heaven.
Visitation will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 3820 SW 9th St, Des Moines, on Tuesday, April 15 from 3 PM to 7 PM. The funeral service will be held at the church on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at 2:00 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd or Hospice of Central Iowa-Kavanagh House on 56th Street.
