Ralph Costanzo died April 11, 2008 at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines. His body has been donated to Des Moines University and a memorial mass will be 10 AM Thursday, April 24, 2008 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
Ralph was born October 17, 1912 in Des Moines to Rosa and Angelo Costanzo. He attended school at St. Anthonys and Old Dowling and was married in the church to Norma Mattiussi in 1936. He was a United States Marine and was stationed for 34 months in the South Pacific. He left the Marines with the rank of Corporal and was a proud veteran of the Marine Corp.
He was appointed to the Des Moines Civil Service Commission by Mayor Tom Urban which he proudly served for 24 years. For his time spent working for the City of Des Moines, he was presented with the Key to the City by Mayor Daniels. Ralph was strong member of the Teamsters, holding several offices as well as President of Local 394. Ralph enjoyed all sports but was especially found of golf, winning several trophies over his life. He is a proud charter member of the WW II Memorial in Washington D.C.
He is survived by his wife of 71 wonderful years, Norma and their son Ralf, both of Des Moines. A host of nieces, nephews and many friends will miss him.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church or the Donor’s Choice. Hamilton’s Southtown is handling arrangements.
