Walter Sly
April 06, 2008
Walter “Walt” John Sly was born to Harold and Gladys Sly on May 8, 1927, in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. He grew up and attended school in Durand, Wisconsin, before joining the Navy in 1945. Walt worked various jobs in Wisconsin before joining the Harmon Glass Company. In 1965, the company moved him to Des Moines where he worked until his retirement in 1989. He married Shirley (Harms) Theis September 12, 1975. Walt enjoyed woodworking, traveling, camping, boating and an afternoon drink — but most important to him was his family.
He is survived by Shirley, his wife of 33 years, 10 children: Bill Sly (Kate), Bob Sly (Debbie), Mike Sly, Pam Kelly (Craig), Jeff Sly (Shawn), Mike Theis (LeAnn), Anthony Theis (Linda), Chris Theis (Marsha), Greg Theis (Lisa) and Steve Theis (Michelle), 26 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Betty, and her husband Bill Maxwell, and many nieces and nephews. As his family gathered to say their goodbyes, Walt said, “You’re all equal. I couldn’t find a better bunch.” And we couldn’t ask for a better husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather or friend. Safe travels, Walt. Until we see you again.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Hospice of Central Iowa and the Lance Armstrong “LIVESTRONG” Foundation.

So sorry to hear of Walt's passing and your loss, I first met Walt in 1977, he always had a quick wit and a joke to tell, and was always a gentleman. Walt was a real master when it came to cutting, installing and working with glass. He will be missed by all who ever knew him, rest in peace old friend.
