James Eugene Welborn, 72, of Cedar Rapids died on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the Iowa City VA Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home with burial following at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines. The family will greet friends from 4-8 P.M. Friday evening at the funeral home. James was born and raised in Des Moines and was the founder of the Willis-Dady Emergency Shelter in Cedar Rapids and had received the Sister Mary Linus Award for outstanding performance in Social Work from Mount Mercy College. He was a member of the Knights of Pythius, had served in the Army and enjoyed cooking, golfing, fishing and traveling. He is survived by Bernice Roman, his son James (Hillary) Welborn of Des Moines and their children Katelynne, Madison and Channing, his daughter Diane Roman of Des Moines, his sisters JoAnn (Dean) Meyer of Des Moines and Peggy (Paul) Asher of Des Moines, his sister-in-law Frances Welborn of Des Moines as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Mercy Department of Social Work.
