Stephen Savage
November 03, 2017
Stephen Ilo Savage, age 70, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, November 3, 2017.
Stephen was born November 12, 1946, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Melvin and Arista Savage. He was owner of Mel & Ila’s barber shop where he worked along with his parents and later his oldest son, Steve. He had been a barber for 52 years, following in the footsteps of his father and mother before him. He loved his job and as customers will tell you he always had a story or a joke to tell. Steve was a huge Cubs fan and was thrilled last year when they won the World Series. He loved entertaining, listening to country music, he was a member of PMECI and took charge of the microphone whenever he could. One of his favorite pastimes was having coffee with his friends and he loved spending time with his dogs.
Stephen is survived by his wife, Diana; son, Kenny (Holli) Savage; grandchildren, Justin, Kris, Olivia, Stephenie, Hazel, Hailey, Braydon and Connor; brother, Jack (Elaine) Savage; his dogs, Cuddles and Buddy; and many other extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Arista Savage; son, Stephen Savage; daughter, Kasandra Savage; brother, Stan Savage; and nephew, Jeff Savage.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, November 10, 2017, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 11, also at Hamilton’s, and will conclude with burial at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be directed to North Community Center, 3010 6th Ave, Des Moines, IA 50313.

My husband Bob and I have known Steve and his family since the seventies.
Steve was a joy to know because he was interested in all people and their individual stories. I was upset to hear of his passing.
My prayers are with his family during this difficult time.

I was one of the Union Park kids from the old neighborhood. I had a lot of fun hanging out with Steve and Stan at the park. The good old days. I know you are sad, but Steve is joyfully reunited in Heaven with his beloved parents, brother and children. May God give you all comfort and peace.

When I felt a little down a visit to my Friend and Barber Steve was in order. Steve always had something to say, a joke to tell or a true story to pass on. I always felt better for having my visit with my friend Steve and I got a real good haircut to boot. If they have barber shops in Heaven I plan on going to Steves.
God be with you all.

We are sorry to hear of the passing of Steve. He was our first landlord many, many years ago and we had the blessing to become friends with him as well. He cut Pauls hair for many years so even after we bought our first home he still enjoyed Steve's company. We were also lucky enough to know Steve Jr for short time. Prayers and condolences sent in your loss.

Dear Diana and Family,
Steve was the first person to cut my hair when I was a little boy. I just happened to stop by the shop and heard the sad news from Kenny. I'm so sorry for your loss and will never forget Steve and all the talks we've had over the past 30 or so years. I always looked forward to getting my haircut just so I could visit with Steve. He was one of those people that when around, made me feel like I was back in time and when my grandfather JD was around. Steve and I would talk about the past when he had cut my grandfather's hair and how things had changed over the years on both sides. Steve was a great person and will never be fogotten.
