Eddith was born to Gilbert and Tressie Porter on a farm near Allerton, Iowa where she attended school and graduated in 1928. She then graduated from Chillicothe Business College in Missouri. While working in Des Moines as a nanny and a secretary, she met and married Gustav Gerald Schartner in 1932. After working at various places, she took a job with Gerald at the Ordinance plant during WWII. After the war she became a secretary at the Des Moines Book Bindery. After several years there she took a job with Mid American Dairymen from which she retired at age 65. After that she worked at Pioneer Columbus Community Center and then Volunteered at Veteran’s Hospital. She quit work when she was 85!
Eddith Played 3 court 6 girl basketball for Allerton High. She was a “running forward”. Her coach called her his “little sure-shot.” She also played basketball in college. She loved it. She never missed any of her son’s games played in high school, college and 10 years after. When he started coaching she became Lincoln Basketball’s Number One Fan. She watched over 1000 games he coached in 40-some years. When her grandkids and great-grandkids came along she had other sports to watch too. They played various sports at Lincoln, Hoover, Dowling and Johnston. She also watched Missouri U baseball, where her grandson pitched. She went to dance recitals for 20 years and she coached YBA basketball. Eddith was a true and faithful wife, a great mother, and a loving and caring Grand-and-Great Grandma. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children, Janette (Paul) Grodt and Jerry Schartner, her grandson, Kurt Moody (Lisa), granddaughters Kim Fenimore (Jim), Shelly Livingston (Stan), Lynne Graham (George), and Tracy DeVenney (Steve). She was great-grandma to 6 grandsons and 6 granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her three brothers, her two sisters and her daughter-in-law, Joan Schartner.
The family is extremely grateful to the care-givers at Fleur Heights Care Center and Hospice of Central Iowa. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in memory of Eddith to Lincoln High Girls Basketball, 2600 S.W. 9th.
