Doris Randa Reese of Des Moines passed away on March 4, 2008 of natural causes.
Doris was born in Galesburg, IL and moved to Des Moines in 1930. She was chosen to represent our state as Miss Teenage Iowa in 1932. She graduated from North High School and was able to fulfill her educational dreams and her career goal when she became a nurse and worked for Drs. Sohm, Lawler and Murphy until the late 1940’s. She also worked for the Draft Board during the Korean War. In 1964 she went to work for Distinctive Printing and Packaging and retired from the firm in the mid 1980’s.
She was an active civic leader; contributing countless hours for several organizations including, The Christ Child Home, Holy Trinity Church Rosary Society, the Bishop Drumm Home and Hospice of Central Iowa. She was also a former president of the Catholic Woman’s League
Preceding her in death was her spouse, John Randa in 1953; and her second spouse, Del Reese in 1968; daughter, JoAnne Estes; brothers, Edward, Charles and George Munday; and her infant grandson, Jason Reese.
Doris was proud of her four children, JoAnne, Michelle, John (Barb) and James; nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She was Godmother to over 75 young people and known as “Auntie Doddie” by her 32 nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests donations to projects that were close to her heart, the American Cancer Society, Alzheimer’s Association and Hospice of Central Iowa.
