Grandpa's Chair
by Shannon Mickle
Today this seat sits empty, no longer filled with it's devoted Dodger's fan. One extraordinary grandfather, one remarkable man.
Sharing his views with others, how the world appeared through his eyes. He always enjoyed a good conversation with those near his side.
One thing we can all agree on, there was no beating around the bush. For this man always told it the way HE thought it was.
Even through many challenges, those ugly ups and downs, he was always willing to lend a hand or ear for all of those he loved so dear.
Words cannot express how he will be truly missed. The absence of his laughter, his ornery comments, and his unique chatter.
In addition to his stubbornness, even at times was one, we all agree could be hard to handle. All of these qualities made him such a unique man.
So again, as I stand here staring at his bare chair, a flood of memories begins to fill my head. For there are so many things I would like to share with you, the roles he played within each of our lives, and friends he kept close at hand.
But out of all the roles I have seen him play, the one I completely fell in love with the most, was the one role he played the best. We can all agree, was the role of grandfather.
It is now I leave you with this, if you truly want to know about this extraordinary man, ask one of his many grandkids. For they have always held his heart within their hands.

There are people that come into your life and rearrange just about everything you thought you knew...that, for me, was Dan Rice. He was my manager, my friend...at times he was that "snap back into reality" that I so often came to rely on. He was much more to just about everyone, I mean, he was the absent father to some, he was the all knowing force pushing people to exceed their own set limits, and he could be that one person that sat and cried with you when your entire world came crashing down. Dan may have given his opinion, but it was normally tempered with a bit if humor as if to say "hey, I know we're not in a good place right now, but Im still here when this blows over".... Even now, years after I last saw Dan and Rose, I could call him out of nowhere and we could talk for hours. All my love to Rose and the kids...thank you for sharing your lives with me and know my heart is with you.
