Rick Allan Larson
October 03, 2017
Rick Allan Larson, of Des Moines, passed away peacefully at home on October 3, 2017 after a 5 year battle with Lymphoma. Rick was born in Osage, Iowa on January 31, 1948 to Virgil and Leona (Mostek) Larson. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 13, 2017 at Valley Church, 4343 Fuller Road in West Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the church with interment to follow at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
Rick graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines and attended Iowa State University, where he earned a Bachelor degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor Degree in Architecture. During his career he was a staff architect for Life Care Services and worked on retirement communities around the country. When he left Life Care he went out on his own as a home builder and completed many projects for the City of Des Moines. He and his wife Joyce bought and restored a century old home and returned it to its original charm and warmth. His family time was a priority and as a husband and father he was always there.
Following architecture, he developed a passion for farming. He purchased land in southern Iowa where he began a tree nursery which continues to this day. Even though he was a city boy, he was a farm boy on the inside! When he wasn’t working at the farm, he was working on his pilot’s license and building and flying model airplanes. He was a member of both the Experimental Aircraft Association and Des Moines Civil War Roundtable.
Rick is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joyce (Pound); his son, Matthew (Lisa) and their children, Parker, Joshua and Maggie; his daughter, Rebecca (Aaron) Mowell and their children, Madison and Matthew; brothers, Kerry Larson, Rus Larson and his sister, Teresa Wright. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Madeline Mowell and his parents.
The family wishes to send out a very special thank you to Dr. Dan Buroker; nurses, Amy and Sheryl and staff at Medical Oncology and Hematology (Kim, Missy and Pam). You have been part of our family for over five years and we were blessed to have you! Also, a heartfelt “Thanks” to Hospice of Central Iowa and Nurse Sue.
Memorial contributions may be made to Valley Church or Hospice of Central Iowa (HCI).

I've worked with Rick for many years as his printer for Architecture. He would come in and we'd just talk about the farm and airplanes. Good man that will be missed.
