Service Details

Murlyn “Gene” Nicholson died Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at his home surrounded by his family that loves him dearly. And because of this strong love that he shared for his family, he fought long and hard to stay with us and then went peacefully. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 9th at 2 PM at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
He was born in New Virginia, IA. to Mildred Arlene Frost. He loved playing games and at age 13, Gene was awarded what would be the first of two city of Des Moines marble championships. He then placed third at state and then second at state the following year. Gene attended East High School where he was an outstanding baseball player. That love for baseball carried through his life. Whether it was watching baseball or volunteering his time coaching softball for his daughter. He was a loyal person and that carried through to his career. After 33 years of employment at H&W Motor Express, he retired and enjoyed his family. Gene also enjoyed watching John Wayne movies, traveling, going out to eat, and most of all spending time with his family. He was a kind, generous person and everyone that met him found an instant friend. He will be remembered most for being a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife Veda, his three daughters, Debbie (Bill) Brown of Des Moines, Terri (Kevin) Duis of Des Moines, and Christy (Scott) Christensen of Clive, six grandchildren, Jessica Brown, Amanda (Brian) Moede, Brad Brown, Jeffrey Duis, Abbie Duis, and Spencer Christensen, and soon to-be great grandchild, a brother Glenn (Phyllis) Nicholson of Polk City, as well as other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his mother and eight brothers and sisters.
The family would like to thank the Hospice staff, our nurse Debbie, and the third floor staff at Lutheran Hospital for their care and support.
