Maurice Wayne Arndt, 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born on February 14, 1931, to Herman and Arnot Arndt in Onawa, Iowa. He was the third of five children.

Maurice is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Mary Arndt; daughter, Deborah (Jeff) Chambers of Hartland, WI and their children, Meghan (Servando) Benitez, Lindley Chambers (fiancé, Jake Pagels), Emily (Matt) McGown; son, David (Konnie) Arndt of Quincy, IL and their children, Sydney Arndt and Nicholas Arndt; son, Douglas (Kim) Arndt of Indianola, IA and their children, Alison Arndt (fiancé, Ryan McCoy) and Andrew Arndt; son, Steve (Julie) Arndt of Geneseo, IL and their children, Abigail Arndt and Samuel Arndt; brother, John Arndt; and sister, Julia Hittle.

Maurice served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reconnaissance Battalion during the Korean War. He was a graduate of the University of South Dakota – Vermillion where he met his wife Mary. He taught high school Industrial Arts and History; coached football, wrestling and track; and was a Boy Scout leader. He concluded his education career teaching Industrial Arts at Des Moines Area Community College. He was a beekeeper inventing patented beekeeping equipment sold throughout the United States and Canada. Growing up on his family farm in Onawa, near the Missouri River wetlands, he enjoyed nature and wildlife throughout his life. In retirement, Maurice returned to his childhood love of the outdoors by purchasing a farm. He continued to farm until 2011. In addition to being a loving father and husband, he will be best remembered for his hard work ethic and dedication to his family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 2, 2017, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Interment will take place at Iowa Veterans Cemetery at 12:30 p.m.
