Shirley Balkema

Shirley “Sue” Balkema, 67, died, Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at her home in Des Moines. Sue was born on May 8, 1940 in Knoxville, Iowa to William and Armelda Kaster. Sue was born and raised in Knoxville and spent the remainder of her life in the Des Moines area.
Sue enjoyed crafts, interior decorating, camping and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Sue is survived by her husband, James; daughters, Debra Lukenbill of Polk City, and Christine Park of Bondurant; sons, Terry Larson of Pleasant Hill, and Robert Larson of Earlville; step-daughters, Kim Wolfe of Fort Dodge, and Tammy Pieart of Polk City; step-sons, John Balkema of Peoria, IL and Donald Balkema of Rockford, MI. brothers, Cecil (Pete) Banks, Jim Kaster and sisters, Judy McDonald, Pat Kraber and June Peck and eighteen grandchildren. Sue was preceded in death by her first husband Rudy Larson, her parents and two brothers, Paul Kaster and Jerry Kaster.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 9, 2008 at the United Methodist Church, 313 E. Montgomery St., Knoxville, Iowa. Burial will be at Lincoln Cemetery. Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Visitation with family present from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave, Des Moines.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the John Stoddard Cancer Center in Des Moines.
