Service Details
Mary Helen Heller, 77, of Des Moines, peacefully went into the arms of Jesus on Saturday, September 9, 2017. Mary was born on January 22, 1940 in Coffey, Missouri to Gertrude (O’Connor) and Henry Leih.
Mary enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing with her family and friends. She loved serving her Lord. Most of all she cherished time loving on her family.
Those left to treasure her loving memory are her husband, Thomas; children, Susan (Doug) Kingsbury, Elizabeth Heller, Blaine (Roxanne) Heller, Thomas (Debra) Heller; 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, LaVaughn (Robert) Hudson and Karma (Gary) Nelson; and many other loving family and beloved friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Harry Cunningham; brother, Edward Leih and sister, Phyllis Gall.
Visitation will be held 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Ft. Des Moines Open Bible Church, 1116 Army Post Road. She will be laid to rest following the service at Chapel Hill Cemetery on Merle Hay Road in Des Moines.

Growing up our family has always had friends that were really close family to us. Mary was one of those people. I got to know her through her late sister Phyllis (Aunt Phyllis and Uncle Buck to me)growing up and though them we met or extended Fort Dodge family and so many more we hold dear to our heart. Mary, always full of love, always a smile, and gave the best comforting hugs you could get. (And sometimes we might get a good lecture too) She will truly be missed by all of my family but what a blessing we will see her again someday. To the family, we love you all, you have our deepest sympathy, and you are all in our prayers.

I haven't seen Mary in a long time...physical problems of my own kept me housebound.
I considered her to be a good friend, and an inspiration.
Mary will be missed.
To Tom and all her family, I send my sincere sympathy. Prayers for all who are mourning her loss, take comfort in knowing you will see her again and be together for eternity.

To all those who loved my grandma, we know now what we have always known about her service to the Lord. She for many of us was an open door and was a conduit for her to keep us all connected to the family through her. Given her passing, I hope we can all acknowledge that we now have shoes to fill with compassion, togetherness, and unconditional love. She has bestowed those gifts upon all of us and despite anything in the world we had been through the door was open for us to be with her. My strongest belief is that my grandma would want us more than ever to put aside anything that would be silly enough to divide us and come together as one. This is not for her but her gift to us all that we cannot be conquered as family and friends with the unity she brought to our lives. The stories she would share to connect us will be treasured forever. Never was I privately embarrassed about being her Rodney Pooh and I love you grandma. I love you all who have known her in her journey and may her gift of connections and family bring us to pass these gifts with one another. With love, grandson Rodney
