Harold L. Hodges

Harold Leslie Hodges, 90 years old, was called home on Saturday, September 09, 2017. He was born March 12, 1927, in Adel, Iowa. He was the 7th child of 13 born to Leslie and Hazel Hodges. He married his sweetheart, Elva on June 23, 1945. They were blessed with three children, Janet, Steven, and Rocky.

Early in their marriage, Harold worked in the construction industry building roads and traveling the state of Iowa. He later finished his working career at Firestone as a tire builder for 30+ years. He is remembered as being incredibly hardworking, resourceful, and talented.

After raising their children in Des Moines, Harold and Elva spent time in Arizona and Indiana. As the years passed, time brought them back to Des Moines. Harold had many hobbies including racing, racecars, visiting his father's farm, building and restoring old tractors, enjoying tractor club, growing cockscombs, gardening, and growing trees. He had a curious and inquisitive mind that intrigued everyone he met. His family has fond memories of his stubbornness, while frustrating at times, made reminiscing full of laughter.

He is cherished by his family for the love he had for Elva. He appreciated her and held her in the highest esteem. He also loved eating anything Elva fixed because, "nobody could cook like her", he'd say so matter of fact. He was proudest of his family and the fellowship they brought. He truly believed he was blessed with the best family and he couldn't have asked for anything greater.

Harold is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Elva; children Janet (Russ) Hancock, and Rocky (Rebecca) Hodges; 6 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren; siblings Lloyd (Harriet) Hodges, Jeanne Mabe, and Ronald (Sheryl) Hodges; and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Steven, his parents, and nine siblings.

Lastly, Harold loved the Lord with his whole heart and he has left a legacy that will continue to have impact for many years. He was a man of integrity. His family is forever grateful for his Godly example and faithful dedication to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, September 15, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave, Des Moines. Funeral service will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, September 16, also at the funeral home, and will conclude with burial at East Linn Cemetery in Redfield, Iowa.
