Leslie Vern Munger

Leslie Vern Munger, 85, passed away Friday, August 18, 2017. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, and the funeral service on Wednesday, August 23 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines. Burial will be Thursday, August 24 at Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa, IA at 1:00 p.m.
Les was born May 19, 1932 in Jasper County, IA. He graduated from Newton High School, and joined the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. He later worked for the SE Polk School District as a grounds keeper and school bus driver. Les was very talented and had many interests. He enjoyed cooking and was an active volunteer at St. John’s Lutheran catering and helping in the kitchen, and taught ceramics and cake decorating through adult education classes. Les loved music and singing in the St. John’s choir and was also an elder of the church.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 44 years, Judith Ann “Judy” Munger; his niece, Janet (Gene) Bishop; 2 nephews; cousins, Gerald (Kris), Wayne (Mary) and Dennis (Tammy) Bell; and other cousins and loved ones. Les was preceded in death by his parents, Elva (DeMoss) and John E. Munger.

All the celebrations, back yard conversations, holidays, milestones & yes, his famous chocolate cake are etched there as comforting memories. Surely now he's the one giving light to the stars.
