Don Smith

Don Delano Smith, 58, passed away at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Don was born July 18, 1959, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Donald and Carolyn (Gatewood) Smith. He was a happy and friendly man who knew no enemies. He proudly served in the 82nd Airborne. Don loved all his children and grandchildren unconditionally. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, dancing, and hanging out with friends.

Don is survived by his daughters, Tamekia and Jimmicca; his grandchildren, Aurteamus, J’Vonn, Stephen, Alona, Doneika, Andrea, Jimmaurie, Mia, Ya’Nya, and Leeontae; siblings, Antonio, Stacey (Kim), Conrad, Luwana (Venson), Kimberly, Ramona, Steve (Joy), Ricky, and Jeff; brother-in-law, Sam; and countless extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane; parents, Donald and Carolyn; all his grandparents; and his nephew, Edward.

Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by funeral services at 2:30 p.m., Monday, August 14, 2017, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial with military honors will occur at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa.
