Charles H. “Charlie” Whitfield passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Mercy Hospital. Charlie was born on April 30, 1932 in Des Moines, IA. to Willie and Elizabeth Whitfield.
Charles was married to Elizabeth “Betty” Walsh on September 3, 1955, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wichita, Kansas.
Charlie graduated from Tech High School’s Aviation Program in 1950. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He was a route salesman for 7-Up, Budweiser, Sunbeam Bread and Interstate Batteries. Charlie retired from the Des Moines Public School System in 2004.
He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and especially time with his family. He was fondly known as “Charlie the Budman” and was loved by many. He will be greatly missed.
Family will greet friends and family from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., on Friday, August 4, 2017, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. A Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2017, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery with military honors.
Charlie is survived by his children, Joyce (Ron) Pentico, Paul Whitfield, Ann (Tom) Prymek, Susan (Paul) Roth, and Mark (Mary) Whitfield; grandchildren, Michelle (Kent), Emily, Aaron (Aly), Adam (Allie), Hilary, Hailey, Casey, Kelly, Connor, Molly, and Dylan; great-grandchildren, Katelynn, Christina, Brody, Charlee and Kelsey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty in 2012; his son, John in 2000; his parents; his brother, Dwayne and his sister, Mary Tonsi.
Memorial contributions will be directed to the family.

Mark and Mary, my sympathy goes out to all of you including the kids. You'll have to get a virtual hug for now. Praise God for his service here on earth and his Christian guidance. Knowing he is now in heaven with your mom is such a blessing.
