Norman D. Bates
July 22, 2017
Norman Duane Bates, Sr. passed away peacefully in his home and joined his love in heaven, after a long fight with Pulmonary Fibrosis on Saturday, July 22, 2017. Norm was born December 18, 1940, in Omaha, Nebraska.
Norm lived his life working very hard, at times having 2 jobs. Most of his life he spent driving truck for Rath Packing and later retired from Sysco. He married his lifelong love, Linda Gillum on August 3, 1961. They lived most of their married life in the same big home on the south side of Des Moines. Norm and Linda took great pride in making this a “dream home” for their family. Many fond memories were made here, including sledding parties down their big hill in the back yard. Norm’s greatest passion was his family and he made life as comfortable as possible for them. Together, they enjoyed vacations, camping and listening to him play his guitar and harmonica. Norm loved the Lord, attending Bethany Open Bible, Berean Assembly of God and Bethany New Life Christian Fellowship. He will be missed by many family and friends, until they are with him once again in heaven.
Norm is survived by his children, Norm (Diana) Bates, Jr. and Shelly (Bob) Heggen; grandchildren, Ryan (Krista), Emily (Levi) and Ethan; great-granddaughter, Presley; brother, George Bates; sisters, Mabel Burgett, Susan Willson, Shirley Forbing, and Donna Nelson; loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Linda Bates; parents; and other extended family.
The family would like to thank Mercy Hospice Home Care and Kathie Cline, for their loving care, and many friends at Shelly Rose Estates.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 28, 2017, at Bethany New Life Christian Fellowship, 3565 NE 56th Street, Altoona.
Memorials may be directed to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, in loving memory of Norm.

Our deepest condolences to Norman's family. I have lost a very dear friend that I will always hold dear in my heart. Our long talks that we had and remenenced our times working at Sysco always brought out many laughs. You will be dearly missed but happy that you are at peace with no pain.

So very sorry to hear of your loss. I know it is going to be a big hurt for some time. But I have to say I'm very happy for him because I know he's been lonely for so long and I agree with you that they are finally together again in a great place. Love and prayers to all of you however, because it can't diminish the loss you feel.
